Quick Update on Sleep and my Little Guy

I recently wrote a post that was published with The Mighty. In the article I discussed some of the issues that we have dealt with my little guy regarding his sleep patterns. If you haven't read the article you can read it here: http://themighty.com/2016/07/helping-our-son-on-the-autism-spectrum-to-sleep-at-night/ I wanted to give a quick update. Bam Bam has been doing extremely well with sleeping recently. This improvement really began when school dismissed for summer vacation. He has been sleeping up to 12 hours at a time. There is one caveat to this, and that is for this type of scenario to occur my little guy needs to be sleeping with someone else. It really doesn't matter who...My little guy is okay with sleeping in the same room as his brother, mom or dad, or one of his grandparents. On one hand, I am thrilled that he has been sleeping so well. Last summer, there was no way that he would have ever wanted to sleep in. This summer, there are days where I have to wake him up and he is not very happy about getting out of bed. I am not sure what has changed, but I think that the primary factor is that I have been much more lenient about letting him sleep in other people's rooms. With all of this being said, my little guy needs to learn how to sleep in his own room. So, I have come up with a solution. At least, I hope it is going to be a solution!

My kids have been wanting a bunk bed for years. They really started asking for one after a trip to Great Wolf Lodge. This last weekend I got to thinking about the issues we have been facing in regards to keeping me little guy in his own room. For some reason, I then started to think about the bunk bed that my kiddos have been begging for. My thought was this, perhaps if I found a really cool bunk bed for both my older son and Bam Bam to share it may end up alleviating Bam Bam's fear of staying in his own room. I figured that the bunk bed may be a big enough enticement to convince Bam Bam and his older brother to begin sharing a room. As a bonus, my thought was that I would end up turning Bam Bam's room into a video game room for the boys.

When I mentioned the whole bunk bed thing to my boys they both immediately agreed that they thought my plan was a great idea! They seemed thrilled and I am hoping that they will continue to be excited when the bunk bed arrives tomorrow. My little guy did struggle with watching all of his furniture being moved, but I kind of expected that, because change has always been difficult for him. I just needed to continually remind him about the bunk bed that was coming.

I am hoping that this plan will work. My boys will get their new bunk bed, and my hope is that Bam Bam will stay in his own room without waking up throughout the night. I am not sure if this will work, but my hope is that it will. I will update everyone soon!
